(u-s:b /A. Lange & Söhne) More LANGEMATIK for the wrist: The fascination of a unique mechanical marvel in a 40-millimetre diameter case.

In the high-end segment of precision watchmaking, understatement has a name: LANGEMATIK. Since 1997, it has identified all of the self-winding watches crafted by “A. Lange & Söhne”. But the soft-spoken style of the LANGEMATIK conceals some of the most captivating horological innovations of the past decades. The extraordinary Lange L921.4 SAX-0-MAT calibre with the patented zero-reset mechanism now takes centre stage inside the GRAND LANGEMATIK that sports a case enlarged by three to 40 millimetres.

This new model is also powered by the proven bidirectionally winding 21-carat gold rotor with a supplementary platinum mass. The kinetic energy it produces is reliably transmitted to the winding spring via a reversible reduction gearing system with four almost microscopically small ball bearings. Although the intricately embossed rotor occupies a considerable amount of the space afforded by the German silver three-quarter plate, it clearly does, as specified by the designers, expose the escapement with the screw balance, the hand-engraved balance cock, and the whiplash precision index adjuster as typical hallmarks of Lange watchmaking prowess.

The solid-silver dial of the GRAND LANGEMATIK presents a new look as well, emphasising the lucid beauty of its sleek lines. The “A. Lange & Söhne” signature is now aligned with the upper circumference. The horizontal lettering in the middle divides the circular dial into two equal halves. The top half is dominated by the twin aperture of the outsize date as the display of the longest, and the bottom half by the prominent subsidiary seconds dial as the display of the shortest measurement interval. These two displays simultaneously stand for the most attractive, most useful, and technically most sophisticated innovations of this timepiece. The patented outsize date has long established itself as the benchmark in date displays for the entire watchmaking industry. If needed, it can easily be advanced by hand with the push-piece at 10 o’clock.

It has to be the resolve to build a “German” watch that inspired the integration of a mechanism which stops the movement when the crown is pulled and via a heart-shaped switching cam causes the seconds hand to jump precisely to zero. This ingenious zero-reset mechanism allows the watch to be conveniently and precisely synchronised with a reference time signal: When the crown is pushed home again, the movement restarts instantaneously.

Pragmatically speaking, this exclusive mechanism is the suave answer of the traditional manufactory to the quartz revolution of the 1980s with its atomic-clock nimbus that so totally ignores the reality of human “inaccuracy”. After all, the few seconds occasionally lost by the very best mechanical movements are all but absolutely irrelevant to the life of a typical human being. But Saxon inventiveness and the quest for perfection have spawned a convincing solution to this apparent problem: The zero-reset mechanism is simply ingenious.

The GRAND LANGEMATIK is available in yellow gold, pink gold, and platinum with solid-silver dials in champagne, black, or rhodié to match the case material. The hand-stitched brown or black crocodile strap and the solid-gold or solid-platinum Lange prong buckle contribute significantly to its elegant personality.
