(u-s:b /) A new stage in the history of the Royal Oak on the occasion of its 30th anniversary : constantly in pursuit of performance and the search for unusual materials, the star line of the Manufacture adopts rubber and dares to associate it with 18-carat pink gold. Whether natural or derived from hydrocarbon, representing the culmination of a complex alchemy, rubber undergoes a transformation process consisting of intricate secrets that are jealously guarded by specialists.
Rubber
The coating of the octagonal bezel on the Royal Oak demanded that the material adhere perfectly, a requirement rendered more difficult by the sharp edges of this smooth surface and the eight cut-outs required for the case-assembly screws. A series of exclusive surface treatments prepare the pink gold of the bezel to receive this coating, developed to combine durability with impeccable aesthetics that are pleasing both to the eye and the touch.
The black rubber of the octagonal bezel blends elegantly with the brushed pink gold of the case. Referred to as 5N, this alloy is composed of 75% fine gold, 5% silver and 20% copper. At 165 Vickers, 18-carat pink gold is even harder than yellow gold.
The chronograph
The matt slate-grey dial is stamped with an “extra-grande tapisserie” motif. The chronograph comprises a mechanism enabling read-off of continuous or split times while not interfering with the smooth operation of the time-keeper. The sweep seconds-hand circles the dial in one minute, the 30-minute counter is placed at 9 o’clock and the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. Its pushpieces are protected by a guard made from the same rubber as that coating the bezel and constituting the strap.
Crafted in 18-carat pink gold, this model completes the Offshore rubber line of Royal Oak chronographs, launched in the spring of 2001, which previously offered exclusively steel models. Water-resistant to 100 metres and powered by Calibre 2226/2840, a selfwinding movement with small seconds and numerical date display, this chronograph designed for the most extreme situations once again illustrates the creative daring and the tradition of
excellence of the Manufacture Audemars Piguet.
