(u-s:b /Hublot) Hublot is celebrating with brio the fabulous transoceanic solo race around the world, the Vendée Globe, and launching an exclusive Limited Series, the “Vendée Globe” chronograph.
The Chrono "Super B" accompanied skipper Dominique Wavre during the perilous Vendée Globe 2005, a solo round-the-world race in a monohull, without stops or assistance.
The technical performance of this superb chronograph was tested against the most extreme sea conditions for more than three months. From the Roaring Forties to the Furious Fifties, around Cape Horn and through the icebergs of the Antarctic, it had to contend with the most violent winds and waves on the planet, depressions and incessant immersions, as well as impacts and abrupt changes in temperature.
A sneak preview of the new Hublot range before Baselworld 2005 - Hublot has created for the “Vendée Globe” chronograph a unique dial adorned with the world map in silver over electric blue lacquer, enhanced with the route of the mystic Vendée Globe race in red, protected by a new double anti-reflection crystal. A screw-down crown, obviously made of natural rubber, with its two ‘UPTS’ chronograph push-pieces fitted with lockable rings, also in rubber, resolve the problem of water-resistance in chronographs once and for all. On the technical side, a bezel with a new tachymetric scale, a mechanical movement with automatic winding mechanism and a beautifully engraved back with the other side of the world map, water-resistant to 100 m.
This exclusive “Vendée Globe” numbered and limited edition is made of 100 pieces in steel, 50 pieces in 18K pink gold and steel, 25 pieces in 18K pink gold and 10 jewelled pieces set in gold.
The numbers 001 to 003 will be presented as an award to the first 3 skippers to cross the Vendée Globe finishing line, Vincent Riou, Jean Le Camm and Mike Golding. Their Hublot watch will be presented during the official Vendée Globe Award ceremony, on May 7th, 2005, at Les Sables d’Olonne.
The Chrono “Vendée Globe” number 004 with a blue crocodile strap will be awarded for the “Emotion Grand Prize” to a skipper whose name will be divulged on May 7th.
An award that is more than merited by the Swiss watch with a casing inspired by a porthole (hublot). The company created the event 25 years ago, audaciously combining pure gold with a strap in natural rubber. An innovative concept using a revolutionary blend of different materials, plus unequalled design and technical performance, built on a veritable brand philosophy.
Today more than ever, under the management of Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, the development of watch creations is relentlessly pursuing its quest for the perfect blend of components and performance.
A guiding principle that finds full expression in linking this Vendée Globe chronograph with the fabulous legend of the sea and human achievement.
At 06 hours 15 minutes and 20 seconds local time in France on the 8th of February 2005, the 60-foot monohull Temenos-Hublot, helmed by the Swiss skipper Dominique Wavre, crossed the finishing line of the Vendée Globe 2004-2005, the solo round-the-world ocean race, without assistance, which departed from Les Sables d’Olonne (France) on November 7th 2004.
Dominique Wavre finished in fourth place out of the 20 participants (7 dropped out) in this perilous solo ocean race with no assistance or stops. The race time for covering 23,680 nautical miles is 92 days, 17 hours, 13 minutes and 20 seconds, behind Vincent Riou, the winner, Jean Le Camm and Mike Golding.
Nevertheless Dominique achieved the feat of beating the record set in the Vendée Globe 2000 by Michel Desjoyeaux of 93 days, 3 hours, 57 minutes and 32 seconds. The Vendée Globe is the second most important sailing event in the world, often compared to the Everest of the sea. Three months alone around the world in the biggest transoceanic desert.
If there had to be only one, this one should be it: The South Pacific, the Roaring Forties, the Furious Fifties, the mystical Cape Horn, sailing through the icebergs of the Antarctic, the race that sailors refer to as the Everest of the Sea.
The technical performance of the Chrono “SuperB” Dominique was wearing has been put through rigorous testing for 3 months in the most extreme sea conditions, with depressions and constant immersions, temperature changes and numerous impacts during manoeuvres.
During his press conference Dominique stated that he had had an even more intense and difficult Vendée Globe than the last one, with the most violent conditions off Cap Horn and perilous confrontations with icebergs. Dominique's boat appeared as if by magic out of the black immensity of the Atlantic to the yachts that set out to meet him around 05:15 on the morning of the 8th of February. The other highly emotional moment was the legendary re-entry of the boat into the port entrance channel at Les Sables d'Olonne around 06:35.
It was here that Dominique took out his distress rockets and stood on the prow of his yacht to wild acclaim from the large crowd that turned out despite the very early hour and the wailing of foghorns. Dominique is the first Swiss sailor to have completed a solo world tour (Vendée Globe 2000). After that, for 3 years he held, the world speed record over 24 hours (430.7 miles – over 770 Km).
Dominique also paid homage to his monohull, praising its extraordinary performance in violent winds, keeping going even though it was damaged and could have risked a fatal dismasting. He was happy to see older boats that had been successfully upgraded competing with new boats. Vincent Riou was first to cross the finishing line in an upgraded boat, proving the strength and talent needed by the skippers in this mythic race. He was also first to come on deck to congratulate his skipper friend Dominique at dawn on February 8th amongst friends, family, sponsors and supporters. Three cheers for our skipper Dominique Wavre.
