(u-s:b /) - From Casio and Christian Dior to Zodiac – a preview of the latest new designs
Big international fashion labels are playing an ever greater role in the watch market. This trend will be clear to see at Inhorgenta Europe 2003 (21–24 February) in Munich. At this, the most important fair in the EU for watches, clocks, jewellery, pearls, precious stones and technology, two new designer brands will be making their debut: Christian Dior and Versace. Also on show in Munich will be the Swiss-made label Zodiac. The following alphabetical list gives a preview of what other new designs and highlights the exhibitors at Inhorgenta Europe 2003 will be presenting. The list is based on information received from the exhibitors by the editorial deadline of mid December 2002, and is not to be regarded as a full and complete listing.
In 2003 Casio is celebrating 20 years of G-SHOCK! Each year this product classic comes up with new designs and functions, and 2003 is no different in that respect. The highlights presented at Inhorgenta Europe for the spring/summer business, will be the G-SHOCK MTG-900 with radio-solar technology, and the G-SHOCK G-510D with chronograph. The WAVE CEPTOR radio watch series is also expanding: the new models not only offer radio-precision time-keeping, but also have many storage and alarm functions.
Christian Dior, one of the premium brands in the LVMH group, will be presenting its watches for the first time at Inhorgenta Europe 2003. Dior´s Sparkling Collection meets the world of fashion. The top model, 'Riva Chrono Sparkling', shows that even rectangular watches can be 'ultimately feminine' – and of course the 43 precious brilliants in the watch play their part in this, too.
Citizen, the world´s biggest manufacturer of wristwatches, will be showing the 'Promaster', the highlight from its diving watch series. With its titanium case, 6 mm thick sapphire crystal, automatic movement (mechanical self-winding) and helium escape valve, it is perfect for professional divers. It is water-resistant to 1,000 metres.
Chronoswiss will be showcasing its 'Timemaster' chronograph as the highlight of its stand in Munich. This superb-quality timepiece with automatic winder has an antireflection sapphire crystal and a screwed sapphire crystal base. It is water-resistant to 100 metres.
DKNY will be presenting its new collection for 2003. This includes a new stainless steel chronograph with a distinctive date display on the 4.
The 'Time Frames Collection' from Diesel features modern digital watches with integrated suede straps and retro cases with stainless steel armbands. According to the manufacturer, the new collection is reminiscent of antique motorsports instruments. A number of watches in the collection, which also contains some larger models, are fitted with striped textile straps.
At Fossil, the trend is also in part towards larger cases. In the ladies collection eye-catching straps set the tone. New this season are also watches with continuous or flashing graphics in the dial. In addition, Philippe STARCK with Fossil is launching ladies´ watches on the market. The star designer dedicates this series of timepieces to the 'Union of people and objects'.
Festina is placing its focus on a much extended collection of ladies watches. Alongside its successfully launched 'Oro Gold Collection', Festina will this year also be showing many new models, which have so far only been available on markets abroad.
Michel Herbelin, who describes himself as an 'old master of French watchmaking art', is bringing along two very special designs: the Newport J-Class GMT 'Tonneau', which features a GMT function (second time zone on 24-hour display) and the ladies model 'Antares', which has a lunette set with brilliants.
Junghans, the leading German watch brand, will be presenting 'Sinus', its new flagship model. This power timepiece has a ceramic and steel case, and inside it is just pure high-tech. At Inhorgenta Europe this innovative and traditional company will also be launching its 'Spektral Solar' onto the market; this is a radio-solar watch in a titanium case. Junghans´ aluminium radio series is also sure to delight the trade audience.
Maurice Lacroix will be presenting the redesigned 'Selena' watch, which is also in itself a beautiful piece of jewellery. The case, either classical round or tonneau-shaped, has clear, clean lines, with a superbly simple, sophisticated look. The high point of the new Selena collection are styles with 28 (round case) or 32 (tonneau-shaped case) brilliants.
Longines is to feature its 'Avigation Maxi' series, designed as a homage to the early pioneers of aviation. In addition to the limited-edition watches with handwound mechanical movement, models are also available in unlimited series.
Oakley will be presenting a new model in Munich – it´s 'Detonator' watch. This analog chronograph with the digital pulse of a quartz-driven movement is intended to appeal to human logic, says the manufacturer, as it turns the sometimes awkward and complicated setting of the alarm into a simple, intuitive process.
Omega is to showcase the new 'De Ville Co-Axial', the first chronograph with coaxial escapement. This enables a much more constant precision and increases the longevity of the timepiece.
The Swiss watchmaker Kurt Schaffo, well-known for his hand-thinned and hand-engraved watches, will be bringing along a special highlight to Inhorgenta Europe 2003: the EDUARD 1907 is a homage to his own grandfather, who was the inspiration behind Schaffo´s fascination with the art of watchmaking. Engraved into this masterpiece of craftsmanship is a portrait of his grandfather.
Rado´s 'Rado v10k' is a watch made of the hardest known material – diamonds. V10k stands for 10,000 Vickers, the highest value on the hardness scale in diamond technology.
'The Great Blue' is the name of a new series of gentlemen´s watches from Seiko. This elegant sports watch features a range of technologies, including Kinetic Auto Relay technology, which can keep going for up to four years without a battery. How? It draws its power solely from the movement of the arm.
Versace (licensee: Time Mode) is taking part in Inhorgenta Europe for the first time, and will be bringing along four watch series. The distinctive 'Versace on Corniche' model by the Italian design house is not only a luxury timepiece, but also an unusual piece of jewellery. Available in a choice of designs, the 'Versace on Corniche' sometimes looks like a watch, sometimes like a bracelet.
Zodiac was founded as far back as 1882 by Jacob Calame in La-Chaud-de-Fonds. Several months ago the brand was acquired by Fossil. With this new addition, the lifestyle company is entering into a new market segment, into that of Swiss-made watches. The new collection for 2003 will be on show for the first time in Munich. One of the chronographs attracting attention at this stand will be the 'Ambassadeur'.
