(u-s:b /) The name Seamaster carries with it a wealth of history at OMEGA. First launched in 1948, the Seamaster was, as the name suggests, specially designed for use in extreme ocean environments. From the outset, its credentials were made clear, with most models being named solely after their water-resistance depths (in metres), starting with the Seamaster 300 in 1957, going deeper with the Seamaster 600 in 1970 and reaching the highest-ever water-resistance of any Seamaster in 1971 with the Seamaster 1000m Professional. Numerous famous divers have relied on the Seamaster over the years, including underwater diving specialist Alain Julien and French freedivers Roland Specker and Jacques Mayol.
The Seamaster Aqua Terra brings a refreshing contrast to the Seamaster collection through more than just its name: its refined elegance complements the robust and rugged design of the divers watches in the collection. The Aqua Terra has very pure lines inspired by the Railmaster model from the 1950s, which – like the Seamaster Professional models – was also designed for professional use, with its special anti-magnetic double case back making it ideal for railway employees who worked in areas with high magnetic fields. The Aqua Terra case combines classic design touches with unmistakable OMEGA traits, such as the tapered and facetted lugs with contrasting brushed and polished finishes. The classic theme continues with the unobtrusive dial, which has applied facetted triangular hour markers and an applied OMEGA symbol and name, as well as a simple polished bezel to complete the sober look. Luminous points at the edge of the hour markers and luminous inserts on the Dauphine hands (with striking arrowhead indicators on the minute and central seconds hands) offer optimum legibility in all light conditions. The Seamaster Aqua Terra models with the new silvered opaline dial are available exclusively on the 41mm diameter stainless steel case and come in two different executions: with blued steel hour markers and hands or with red gold-plated hour markers and hands. A matching stainless steel bracelet with a sliding clasp and snap fastener or saddle-stitched dark brown alligator leather strap completes these two distinctive new models in the collection. The Aqua Terra naturally remains a Seamaster at heart and is therefore fitted with a screw-in crown and case back that ensure perfect water resistance to a depth of 150 metres/500 feet.
The classic design goes hand-in-hand with technical innovation, since the Aqua Terra’s precision timekeeping is ensured by OMEGA’s exclusive Co-Axial Escapement calibre 2500. This self-winding movement has a meticulous finish of circular-graining, Geneva waves, polished and bevelled bridges, as well as rhodium-plated surfaces, and is certified as a chronometer by the official Swiss chronometer testing institute (COSC). Furthermore, it uses the OMEGA free sprung-balance without index, which avoids the disturbing effects of contact between the balance-spring and the index pins and therefore ensures that the stability of rate offered by the Co-Axial Escapement is maintained over long periods of use. The Aqua Terra models with Co-Axial Escapement are also fitted with a transparent case back, revealing the unique movement for the first time.
The OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra has already established a very popular niche for itself, with customers appreciating the hints of the classic OMEGA watches of the fifties and sixties in the Aqua Terra’s design. The new dials and bracelet combinations reinforce this classic theme and, coupled with the precision of OMEGA’s unique Co-Axial movement, are sure to be yet another winner in the OMEGA collection.
