A ballet dancer with a naked body but a hidden identity, a 21st century Samurai in his defence for ideal and order, a person in an airport camouflaging his racial-social origin, an audience claiming a part of a theatrical performance, a movie star incognito at the Venice carnival – these are among the scenarios imagined by visionary designer Karim Rashid in the creation of the Golay Pearl Mask.

The surrealistic mask blends power, mystery and beauty into a poetic veil of perfection. Karim Rashid, known internationally for his sensual minimalist designs, comments on his newest creation for Golay: “Masks are embedded with historic and religious references representing gods, cults, masquerades, combats. With the Pearl Mask, I want to add a poetic interpretation – a veil of perfection, order and harmony.”

Medieval and yet strangely contemporary, the Golay Pearl Mask evokes power and strength, two unfamiliar notions for this aquatic gem which is venerated as the most feminine of all gems. The impressive theatrical piece of face jewellery, while asserting the paradoxical force of the pearl, masks the identity and the personality of the wearer. “It is a deliberate analogy: a pearl hidden in the oyster and a person hidden behind the mask,” Mr Rashid said.

Commissioned and handcrafted by Golay for its Pearl Evolution project, the Pearl Mask weighs 3’440 grams and features 1’446 round Tahitian cultured pearls of homogenous colours sponsored by leading Tahitian pearl producer Robert Wan.
