(u-s:b /Swatch) SPLASHTIVAL is the name of the spectacle in Lugano to which Swatch is inviting everyone on June 1, 2006 to celebrate its 333 millionth watch and its new product line. Since the “Swatch Jelly in Jelly” collection is (re)uniting Swatch with art, the world-famous Blue Man Group will be creating the latest watch model during their performance on stage. The SPLASHTIVAL promises Swatch and art, a huge show for the public, an act of creation, and an extraordinary live experience.

In May 2006, Swatch will be producing its 333 millionth watch. Reason enough for the subversive trendsetter from Biel to create a new product line and launch it with a grand celebration revolving around the number three: on June 1, 300 journalists from 30 countries will fly into Lugano specially in order to be present at an extraordinary event. As part of this event, the three members of the Blue Man Group will create a strictly limited-edition model for the Swatch Jelly in Jelly collection, which will be presented to the world on the same day.

    Continuing flirtation with art
Nicolas G. Hayek, President and Delegate of the Board of Directors of the Swatch Group, who will personally present the new product line to the world’s press in Lugano, is unable to conceal how proud he is of the new innovation: "Swatch's success is never-ending, it's a work of art. So what could be more natural than re(uniting) Jelly in Jelly with art?” The Swatch Jelly in Jelly collection therefore particularly represents a renewed blossoming of the old romance between Swatch and art. This was kindled in 1985 when Kiki Picasso presented the first Art Special at the George Pompidou Center in Paris. This developed into an unbridled passion, reaching numerous high points with Keith Haring, Tadanory Yokoo, Mimmo Paladino, Alfred Hofkunst, Jean-Michel Jarre, Mimmo Rotella, Xian LaX, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Spike Lee and latterly with the fashion icons Vivienne Westwood, Paco Rabanne, Daniel Swarovski and Jeremy Scott. The Swatch Jelly in Jelly collection is therefore taking Swatch’s affair with art and its exponents forward into the future.

Fresh line with two special models
The first Swatch Jelly in Jelly collection reveals the new interpretation of the Jelly concept in a striking manner: it’s colorful, tremendously refreshing, and makes a bold statement with great charisma. Jelly in Jelly moves a small watch into a larger dimension, thus taking account of the trend towards larger watches. The models are technically more ingenious and more flexible in their design of new shapes, enabling the latest trends to be rapidly reflected. The series includes a classic collection with five models that could be described as fairly casual, and five simple classic watches in cheerful brash colors. The eleventh model (“The talking piece”) will not be presented until the launch event in Lugano, and the twelfth, an individually numbered, limited-edition model, will be created live during this event.

SPLASTIVAL with the Blue Man Group
This act of creation packs quite a punch. For the launch if its new product line, which flirts with art, Swatch is organizing a free public festival of superlatives on the Piazza della Riforma in Lugano on June 1, 2006. The “SPLASHTIVAL” will start at around 7pm with opening acts. These will be followed at 10pm by the entrance of the legendary Blue Man Group – a veritable feast for the eyes and ears: this creative team (easily recognizable by the blue faces that give them their name) has devoted itself to a type of spectacle that brings together exciting and innovative creativity across a broad range of media. Their famous shows combine elements from comedy, pantomime, music and multimedia artistry, creating an absolutely unique form of entertainment. Best known is probably “paint drumming”, where the three blue men play paint-filled drums, creating not only unknown color, light, shape and sound effects but also – in the vicinity of the drums – actual works of art. One of these live, impulsively created pictures will be the template for the subsequent individually numbered, limited-edition Swatch Jelly in Jelly watch. A multimedia art spectacle will therefore be helping to bring Swatch’s new art watch into being.

    Festival atmosphere in Lugano
The SPLASHTIVAL will end with a gigantic laser and firework display over the lake. Since Swatch wants to have as many godparents as possible from Lugano, Milan and all over Switzerland when the new Swatch Jelly in Jelly is born, the SPLASHTIVAL will be publicized via a multimedia campaign during the spring and early summer.

    Photo legend
Nicolas G. Hayek, President and Delegate of the Board of Directors of the Swatch Group: “Swatch Jelly in Jelly is color, it’s shape, and it’s art. It’s an expression of the continued success of Swatch.”
