(u-s:b /Fortis) Flight captain with SWISS UTC by FORTIS

No airline encapsulates the character of Switzerland better than SWISS. Travellers have long come to appreciate our typically Swiss values of reliability, quality, hospitality and more. So wherever their SWISS flight may carry them, they’re taking a little bit of Switzerland along, too. Similarly, few products better embody Swiss values than a wristwatch. Which is why SWISS and the Fortis watchmaking company have teamed up to create a new timepieceexclusively for SWISS.

The Jura region, at the foot of the mountain chain after which it is named, is the birthplace of the Swiss tradition of making mechanical watches – timepieces which are renowned throughout the world, and which reflect the same values as the country itself. So what could be more natural than to create a new watch for SWISS, an accurate and reliable high-performance timepiece to offer our customers? Time is, after all, probably the most valuable commodity in many people’s lives. But it’s also something we don’t directly perceive. That’s why we resort to wearing a watch. And that’s what gives the watches we wear such a philosophical dimension, releasing us from our time-tracking tasks and leaving us freer to enjoy our time instead.
And the tradition continues. Drawing their inspiration from today’s aircraft flight decks and the experiences of SWISS pilots, and with a clear brief of ensuring optimum user friendliness, useful functions, reliability and the use of top quality materials, a joint Fortis/SWISS project team has created the SWISS UTC, a wristwatch that incorporates the entire Fortis philosophy. The new product also boasts a unique and unmistakable feature: an individually numbered 38-by-38- millimetre square steel case.

By using non-reflecting sapphire glass for the newwatch and minimising the size of the upper case, Fortis has provided an optimally-sized dial that offers perfect readability. The dial also uses luminous white Superluminova to enhance readability in more diffuse lighting conditions.
The useful second-time-zone function (UTC stands for Universal Time Coordinated), which can be set separately using a centred hand, will be appreciated by travellers and airline crews alike. The time in the second time zone can be read from a red-tipped hand against a second circular but colour-differentiated scale. Triangular pictograms next to the date window offer a time setting aid, indicating the direction in which the hand must be set. The crown arrangement also offers both top reliability and maximum ease of use.
The glass bottom, which is fixed with four screws, provides a fascinating insight into the micromechanics of the watch, which is water-resistant down to 100 metres. The padded calfskin strap features a 22-mm lug adorned with the SWISS logo; and the steel buckle with its Fortis crown emblem ensures optimum security for the wearer.

SWISS and FORTIS – Two strong brands
The new SWISS wristwatch is a product of the Fortis watchmaking company, which was established in 1912 as a specialist manufacturer of high-quality timepieces.
Fortis, of course, means “strong” in Latin; and strength is an asset that has served Fortis well, along with the boldness, the vision and the innovative flair of the company’s founder. It’s these qualities, too, that have all played their part in establishing and maintaining Switzerland’s proud watchmaking tradition all over the world.
Today’s simple action of winding a watch with a few deft movements of the hand was a revolution back in the 1920s. And the mechanics involved continue to fascinate today. As the world’s first-ever manufacturer of a self-winding wristwatch, Fortis has its firm place in the pantheon of Swiss watchmakers. The company has also established itself as a supplier of timepieces to the international aviation and space communities over the past 20 years. Fortis automatic chronographs have become reliable partners to the pilots and astronauts who spend so much of their time aloft; and Fortis products have been part of the official equipment inventory for space missions for ten years now.
