To celebrate this revolution in watchmaking, TAG Heuer has organized an international sailing event from May 25-28, 2005 in the stunning Bay of Saint Tropez, France.

The “TAG Heuer Aquaracer Trophy” will see 16 TAG Heuer branded sail boats involving 160 professional skippers, journalists and opinion leaders from 18 countries compete during two days to win a trophy celebrating the birth of the new chronograph from the 145-year Swiss watch company. Organized as a Nations’ Cup with each boat proudly bearing the colors and flag of a different country, the “TAG Heuer Aquaracer Trophy” will be the first occasion to test in competition the regatta countdown and chronograph functions of the New TAG Heuer Aquaracer Calibre S.

Only 2 months after astonishing the world in Basel 2005 with the Calibre 360, the world’s first-ever mechanical wrist chronograph measuring and displaying time at 1/100th of a second, TAG Heuer today presents another daring step in movements creation, the analog Calibre S chronograph movement that equips the New Aquaracer Series top-end wrist chronograph. Envisioned, designed, developed and industrialized at TAG Heuer by TAG Heuer watchmakers, designers and constructors, and manufactured only for TAG Heuer, the Calibre S sets a new milestone in Swiss analog chronograph history, 23 years after the birth of the first Swiss analog chronograph at 1/10th of a second, which has equipped the TAG Heuer 2000 series since 1982. Today, the 2000 series has been relaunched under the more aspirational Aquaracer name and is the first TAG Heuer series to propose the Calibre S in its product range.

The New Aquaracer Series takes TAG Heuer’s yachting and diving legacy and pushes it into a fuller expression of the brand's aspirational, upscale and sporty-but-dressy image.

Versatile, the Calibre S is a new movement platform with many further functionalities to come for TAG Heuer in the future

With its multifunctional capabilities, the Calibre S is a real development platform for TAG Heuer, with many other functions besides the countdown and 1/10th of a second. For the first time in analog watchmaking history, it frees designers from the dictature of the 3-6-9 and 2-6-10 sub-dials architecture and proposes a patented and revolutionary way of reading time-related indications. Its bi-directional hands driven by bi-directional motors offer the most universal and immediate reading as directly derived from the dashboard technology of sportscar tachymeters and RPM indicators. In the future, the Calibre S will be proposed in many different functional and aesthetic versions in other TAG Heuer series.

The world’s easiest-to-read chronograph

In terms of functionalities, aesthetics, readability and ease of use, the New Aquaracer Calibre S is nothing less than the most elegant, high-performance sports chronograph ever conceived. Unlike traditional chronographs, characterized by small counters which are sometimes complicated and difficult to read, the TAG Heuer Calibre S equipping the Aquaracer revolutionizes watchmaking by displaying Time, Chronograph elapsed time and a unique Regatta countdown solely with the 3 central hands (hour/minute/second) and two patented counters hosting bidirectional hands positioned at 5:00 and 7:00. The 3 central hands are always used to display either the elapsed hours/minutes/seconds in the Chronograph mode, or the hours/minutes/seconds in the Time mode or the remaining minutes/seconds in the Regatta countdown mode. This unique and intuitive way of displaying the chronograph hour/minute/second with the 3 central hands makes the New Aquaracer Calibre S the easiest to read chronograph in the world. The right semi-circular counter with bidirectional hand displays the tenth of a second in the Chronograph mode. In the Time mode, the date is displayed thanks to the left and right bidirectional hands of the semi-circular counters: the left counter indicates the tens and the right one the units. As elegant as a watch but as performance-oriented as a chronograph, it can now be read at a glance, ideal for all sports timing situations, and absolutely essential during the tense moments before the final start of a regatta.

Time, Chronograph and Regatta Countdown with the push of the crown

To switch from standard Time mode to Chronograph mode or to Regatta countdown mode, just press the crown; once to access the Chronograph mode and twice to access the Regatta countdown mode. The small hand of the semi-circular left counter swaps to indicate the Mode, and all the central hands are automatically set to the appropriate starting position.

It’s easy to operate and a breeze to read.

Every skipper knows that the start is crucial….

In a regatta, the countdown to the start is used to allow the boats to maneuver into the optimal starting position on the line with the best timing. Each skipper must keep track of the countdown to time his start on the starting line at a good speed on a favorable tack in a good position. After the allotted countdown starting time—usually 10 minutes—the starting gun sounds and the race is on.

The Calibre S movement offers sophisticated regatta countdown and chronograph functions, yet it is so easy to use even a novice sailor can quickly master the functions.

Already on the water, the skipper and his crew prepare their watches: pressing the crown of the Calibre S twice makes the central minute hands go to the -10 minute-countdown as indicated on the aluminium bezel. The second hand is set to “0”. The left semi-circular counter hand indicates “REGATTA.”

Tension is in the air. The prep gun sounds and the skipper presses the 2 o’clock pushbutton of his New Aquaracer Calibre S, instantly starting the 10 minutes countdown.

The second and minute hands turn anti-clockwise.

Five minutes later, the gun sounds again and the skipper re-synchronizes his New Aquaracer Calibre S with the committee boat’s countdown, in case the first gun sound at -10 minutes was not perfectly synchronized.

Ten seconds left, "Jib up!" he shouts. The black flag snaps briskly from the committee boat's mast. To leeward he sees the sails snapping in the wind on a dozen starboard tack boats. He swallows hard, glances at the countdown time on his New Aquaracer Calibre S, his hands clenched tight around the tiller...

The countdown is finished, the minute and second hands are reaching zero anticlockwise - the final gun sounds while they are crossing the start line - automatically the chronograph is switched on from zero and runs clockwise while the left counter hand indicates “CHRONO.” They can now time their race with optimal precision and readability…
